Description of the Flag

The flag of P.D. is dark blue (though the shade may vary) with a white cross and a white saltire, both throughout (a british influence?); overall, the party logo on a white disc. This shows a 3D wooden pollbox and "PD" in large red letters; arched around this, also in red letters, "Partido Democrático" above, and "Hanoia - Hari’i - Hametin" (spelling unsure and meaning unknown by me; language is undoubtly Tetum). The ratio seems to be longer than 2:3.

Presentation of P.D.

According to a political analyst (Adelino Gomes: “A Força da Bandeira e os Desafios da Vitória” Público 2001.09.07: 3), «What are PD and ASDT, but different divisions of the same independentist family? »…« PD as the symbol of a new generation, urban and academic, which, inspired by Xanana’s idelogical aggiornamento, herald of the jointing to the independentist cause of all sectors of the timorese society, brought the strugle torch to the universities in Bali and Java and to the foreign embassies in Jakarta.»

P.D. got 31 680 votes in the 2001.08.30 elections (8,72%), recieving 7 of 88 seats in the parlament — even if P.D. got only 15% of Fretilin’s result, it got to be the second party in these elections, closely followed by P.S.D. and A.S.D.T. P.D. was created in 2000 by young members of former Renintil (student resistence). During the 2001.08 election campaign, historical leader Xanana Gusmão's sympathy towards this party was evident. P.D. had the majority of the votes in one of the 13 districts, Aileu.
